On May 18th, Surfrider NYC has partnered with Swim Strong in a 1-hour informational and surf lesson event. Swim Strong provides water safety events in Rockaway for free and is dedicated to inspire youth to achieve their potential through swimming. Hi guys! See details on event page for Earth Day April 20th. There will be planting of a community garden at 96th street and a bunch of great green-living demos. Plus activities going on by some cool co’s which should be rocking- extra hands are always appreciated so come on out and volunteer.

Everyone did AMAZING work in the immediate relief effort after Sandy, and the timing is NOW to dive into the large-scale & long-term rebuild process.

In addition, we have lots of beach & surf events coming up, updates from the coastal development policy summit, and several agencies (and people) to track related to long-term beach restoration planning.

AND: We’ll have refreshments courtesy of Cliffton Dry Premium Sparkling Cider, which just adds to the awesome.

Note that they test from mid-May to mid-Oct at boat launches from Yonkers to Jamaica Bay (using same kits we would use IDEXX and test for same microbes).
Beach Replenishment / monitoring of plans from USACE, FEMA, etc. Points of contact for regular updates from ACE, NYC Parks, and Joint Task Force.
Tester idea: Any interest in running at Ocean Friendly Garden project?

Our collaboration with Clean Seas Coalition, and others, has been going strong. If you’d like to see NYC change it’s relationship with the ubiquitous single-use plastic bag, head over to the Bag It NYC site and register your information (site link on full post pg). It’s technically western Nassau County waters, but we all know that the tide drifts from there to Rockaway whenever it wants, and that we’re likely to surf out there anyway, if that’s where it’s working! Winter is in full effect, and definitely making us wish for beach weather. Our friends east of NYC still need tons of help, and we are keeping the missions going.
