On Saturday, September 18th 2021, Surfrider NYC and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy teamed up for a beach cleanup in honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day! With a cleanup of 2 hours and 44 volunteers, we were able to collect around 185 pound of trash! Thank you to all the volunteers who participated for International Coastal Cleanup Day. More details on what was collected can be seen on our national clean up database at this link. The most common trash items found were different kinds of plastic pollution (fragments, bottles, straws, bags, etc). Clearly, keeping our beaches and oceans clean is critical, as is taking action to advance plastic pollution legislation like Skip the Stuff – sign the action alert here.
Surfrider NYC and JBRPC work together on our Respect Rockaway campaign. The campaign’s mission is to protect New York’s beaches, shorelines, and natural areas in the Rockaway area.
One important part of our mission is to be mindful of our impact on the area. An effective way of being mindful is to make sure we pick up after ourselves and use reusables instead of single use plastics. Trash impacts waterways and wildlife in those areas. Therefore, it’s very important to make sure we keep the areas clean.
