Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has proposed to conduct high-energy seismic testing off the Central Coast in order to map fault zones near Diablo Canyon nuclear plant (supposedly to predict power plant “safety” during an earthquake). The Surfrider Foundation San Luis Obispo Chapter has been actively opposing PG&E’s efforts and questions the overall value of the project given that the project will have devastating effects on marine wildlife and threatens the health of recreational ocean users (fishers, surfers, swimmers and divers) and the testing will not conclusively prove that the power plant will be safe during an earthquake. The Central Coast area between Cayucos and Oceano is very popular for its beaches and recreation. Surfrider believes PG&E can model worst case scenarios and plan for seismic safety using existing information without dangerous and harmful seismic surveys.
