A message from NYC Chapter Chair
Nikita Scott
It’s been a strange year, to say the least. We’ve all struggled with challenges and our organization is no different. Currently, our membership numbers are sitting at 700+, lower than previous years.
Of course, this year has been difficult without the ability for us to host in-person events to encourage membership renewal and attract new members.
Our goal has always been to cross the 1,000+ member threshold for our NYC chapter. With this status, we will have a more powerful influence in our communities and the halls of government and increase awareness of our programs and campaigns that tackle the threats to our ocean.
In 2020, we had one of our biggest campaign victories, which was preventing the construction of the Williams Pipeline in NY Harbor. It took every ounce of your support and time, and we got it done.
I’m also thrilled to announce that we continue our amazing campaigns and programs–the results of which: taught kids to surf in Rockaway, created awareness around offshore drilling and other environmental issues, and launched our new Ocean Friendly Restaurant program to reduce plastic and waste.
Much of this is thanks to you and our team of volunteers, who put in the hours to make great things happen.
And it’s with your continued support as an official Surfrider NYC member that we hope to make 2021 our best year yet and continue to strengthen our toehold in this city!
Next year, I hope you can make it out to a beach cleanup, monthly chapter meeting (zoom), or any of our social gatherings. Check our events calendar to stay posted!
Stay safe and well. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to the protection and enjoyment of our ocean, waves and beaches.
See you in 2021!
Nikita
