Rockaway Beach Dune Creation Project

In October of 2012, Superstorm Sandy ravished the shoreline of Rockaway Beach, NY  leaving behind a devastated community. The boardwalk was washed away, homes were flooded – many beyond repair, and the beach we surfers love so much was left in ruins.

As part of our annual Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue project in 2013, we took the opportunity to strengthen the shoreline against future storms by laying the foundation for new dunes. It was evident that communities that had dunes during the destructive hurricane had fared far better than those without.

Our mission was simple: assemble a bunch of stoked volunteers, gather in Rockaway, and build some dunes. Here is the story of how it all came together.
