Surfrider's 6th Annual State Of The Beach Report

Last week, Surfrider Foundation released its 6th annual State Of The Beach Report.

The report evaluates each state based on different categories: sediment management, development, coastal armoring and sea level rise. Based on these different criterias, the state is given a grade letter. New York was given a C this year, just like last year.

While NY has succeeded with sea level rise planning, in 2021 the state and Army Corps of Engineering put in place a plan to raise 14,000 homes and businesses in Nassau County instead of building large floodgates. It also relies on short-term and costly solutions such as beach replenishment.

Some recommendations from the report: to encourage regional sediment management plans, to require rigorous permits for the reconstruction of damaged homes, just to name a few.
